Te Esperé is an analog photograph from the series Sweet River; True Peace that follows indigenous Maya Q'eqchi' students and their families as they face shifting cultural and gender expectations within their communities and the country at large (Guatemala, 2019). In order to fully take in the environment, the film of the series was treated as much as possible like a skin, absorbing not just the light of the environment but preserving the air, water, and in some cases, the touch of the people themselves. The series and this photograph were developed using Caffenol-C onsite in rural villages throughout Alta Verapaz and Izabal departments of Guatemala. The home and rural environments of which the films was developed and dried left the series with many instances of reticulation, mold, scratches, dust and other residues.
